Berggasthaus Aescher – the True Gem of Switzerland

Berggastaus Aescher-Wildkirchli sits at the top of the Appenzeller Alps and treats you to sweeping views of the cool green valley below. Perched on the edge of a cliff on the side of Santis, the Aescher is only open May-Oct– and when you get there you’ll see why. Access is a challenge. Accessible only by a combination of cable car and hiking, the modest guest house has been operated by the same family for years. This hotel and restaurant, built in 1805 and run by Beny and Claudia Knechtle-Wyss, is in a charming wooden house built dramatically into a rocky cliff.
aescher_wildkirchli_The cozy and quiet restaurant is filled with wooden benches each with excellent views, while a sunny terrace is a great place to stop for summer lunch and gobble down some savory local dishes. Sleeping is very basic– 3 dormitory rooms with 6-10 beds each with Duvets, a single toilet, no shower, no internet or TV– but who needs these when you have the fabulous view.
